Residency Policy

Mississippi College, a Residential College

What does it mean to be a residential college?

Mississippi College houses most of our students on-campus and therefore we consider ourselves to be a residential college. We value creating environments for students to integrate in-class learning with out-of-class experiences in residential settings. Living on-campus has been positively linked to increases in cultural, intellectual, self-concept, and autonomy values, gains in empathy and interpersonal skills, and degree attainment. Since Mississippi College values these principles, we strongly adhere to our beliefs on what it means to be a residential college. However, we understand this may not be the best option for every student. Please see the policy below for more information about living off-campus.

Are you 22 years of age or older?

If you are 22 years of age or older before the first day of classes (Fall/Spring Semester), you can choose to live off-campus and retain some of your institutional aid. Your status will change to commuter status and your institutional aid will be impacted. Since each student's institutional aid is different, please contact the Financial Aid Office for more information regarding your specific situation. The Financial Aid Office can explain how your institutional aid will be impacted. If you decided to live off-campus, please contact Financial Aid at 601-925-3212 or email financialaid@mc.edu and indicate you will be switching to commuter status for the upcoming academic semester. If you have signed up for on-campus housing and have decided to live off-campus, please email residencelife@mc.edu and ask for your housing to be canceled for the upcoming academic semester.

Are you 21 years of age or younger?

If you are 21 years of age or younger on the first day of classes (Fall/Spring Semester) and choose to live off-campus, you will lose all of your institutional aid. If you have signed up for on-campus housing and have decided to live off-campus, please email residencelife@mc.edu and ask for your housing to be canceled for the upcoming academic semester.

Are you commuting from your parent/guardian's local address?

If you are commuting from your parent/guardian's local address you will be considered a commuter and your institutional aid will be impacted according to commuter status. The Financial Aid Office can explain specifically how your institutional aid will be impacted. Please contact the Financial Aid Office at 601-925-3212 or email financialaid@mc.edu and indicate you will be commuting for the upcoming academic semester and provide the physical address you will be commuting from. If you have signed up for on-campus housing and have decided to live off-campus, please email residencelife@mc.edu and ask for your housing to be canceled for the upcoming academic semester.

Would you like to appeal to live off-campus?

If you would like to appeal to live-off campus and retain your institutional aid, you can do one of two things:

  1. Email Residence Life at residencelife@mc.edu with your reason for appealing (non-health-related reason) and an appeals committee will review your appeal and make a final decision.
  2. Call or email Student Counseling & Disability Services at scds@mc.edu for more information about health-related ADA accommodations.
