Bachelor of Science in Education
MC’s B.S. in Education leads to initial Mississippi Educator licensure in Elementary Education (K-6), Secondary Education (7-12), or Specialized Subject-Area Education (K-12)
MC’s B.S. in Education leads to initial Mississippi Educator licensure in Elementary Education (K-6), Secondary Education (7-12), or Specialized Subject-Area Education (K-12)
Theoretical knowledge is integrated with classroom experience and fieldwork for a learning experience tied directly to teaching in the real world.
Education majors at ±«Óătvcomplete a curriculum that emphasizes a strong, liberal arts background. The array of coursework in these programs provides critical background knowledge and skills for the education major along with specialized knowledge for the chosen content area. Classes you take will prepare you for the PRAXIS II exam and the teaching profession.
Once candidates complete the University Core and Interdisciplinary requirements, they are enrolled in the more specific Professional Education courses. Our program framework is grounded in standards put forth by the Mississippi Department of Education, the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC), and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Professional Education and subject matter course requirements at ±«Óătvare periodically reviewed by the State Board of Education and licensure requirements are subject to change by actions of the Office of Educator Licensure.
Courses in the Teacher Education Program (TEP) bring reality to theory and research by illustrating and translating the abstract into concrete suggestions and activities for use in the classroom. Teacher candidates are involved in guided, active observation of students, teachers, administrators, schools, and communities.
The geographic location of Mississippi College provides a variety of settings for field experiences. Located just ten miles west of the state capital, our partner school districts range from the largest urban school district in Mississippi to much smaller rural districts. Teacher candidates learn how to work with students from many culturally diverse communities, as well as experience a variety of teaching, learning, and behavior styles throughout their various field and clinical experiences. As you progress through your education, you will transition from observing a teaching professional in a secondary classroom setting to teaching your own classroom with an experienced teacher nearby.
MC's B.S. in education offers three areas of concentration for licensure. In addition to initial educator licensure, students can complete specific coursework leading to supplemental endorsements.
The elementary education (K-6) degree is designed specifically for students desiring to teach in an elementary school, grades K-6. In addition to initial educator licensure, students can complete specific coursework leading to supplemental endorsements.
Candidates seeking a K-12 education degree must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) prior to enrolling in content-area methods courses, EDU 403, EDU 460, and EDU 471-474 (Directed Teaching, grades K-12).
The secondary education program is for students who wish to teach specific content in a secondary school ranging from grades 7-12. Students can choose from the areas listed below for teacher licensure.
Candidates seeking a secondary education degree must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) prior to enrolling in content-area methods courses, EDU 403, EDU 460, and EDU 431-434 (Directed Teaching, grades 7-12).

This degree planner should be used for planning purposes only. It does not serve as an official degree evaluation. At any time, you can review an unofficial degree evaluation through Banner Web by logging in and clicking on the Student Menu. Then choose Student Records and Degree Evaluation. You can generate a new degree evaluation based on your current major or even generate a “what if” scenario if you are considering changing your major. Please keep in mind that schedule changes and grades earned impact degree evaluations. When you apply for graduation, the Office of the Registrar will generate an official degree evaluation and communicate with you via ±«Óătvemail regarding your results. Please review your academic progress often with your advisor to ensure you successfully complete your academic goals.
