ENTRANCE AND MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM (TEP) Students will apply for admission into the Teacher Education Program (TEP) as part of the course requirements for EDU 300, INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATION. Transfer students, who have had the course equivalent of EDU 300 at another 4-year institution, must make application to the TEP by seeing the licensure secretary in the School of Education during their first semester at Mississippi College. No upper level (300-400) courses including EDU 300 are accepted in transfer from 2-year colleges as part of Teacher Education program requirements. All students applying for entrance into the TEP are given one calendar year from the time of their first testing to pass the Praxis I (if required) and to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above. Students pass the Praxis I as part of the entrance requirements into the TEP. Students also pass Praxis II which includes the Principles of Learning and Teacher (PLT) and a specialty area test in order to be licensed by the MS Department of Education. Student(s Signature: Date:  As part of NCATE/NSTA requirements for science education, each candidate must successfully pass the following assessments in order to be recommended for licensure. This is in addition to the course requirements. Note, candidate refers to the preservice teacher and student refers to the students in the preservice teacher class during the professional semester. Assessment one: Candidates must pass the Praxis II and PLT. Candidates must score a minimum of 150 on the Praxis II content exam and a 152 on the PLT. Assessment two: Candidates must have a 2.5 GPA overall and in their major in order to enter the Teacher Education Program and in order to student teach. Assessment three: Unit Plan Candidates must successfully complete a unit plan during the Methods of Science Teaching course (BIO/CHE 435). If a candidate earns an unacceptable rating in any one category or earns an overall unacceptable rating, the candidate will not be recommend for licensure. Assessment four: Safety and Welfare Candidates must earn an acceptable rating in each area of the safety rubric during their candidate teaching semester. The assessment will be completed by the cooperating teachers and the supervising teacher. If a candidate receives an unacceptable rating in any category, he/she will be given an opportunity to raise the score during the second placement. In order to receive a passing grade for professional semester and be recommended for licensure, a candidate must complete this assessment with no unacceptable ratings in any category. Assessment five: Candidate Learning Assessment This assessment addresses student learning as a result of the candidate teaching. Student data including results of pretest and posttest will be included. The requirements will be found in the student teaching portfolio requirements. The assessment will be completed by the supervising teacher during the first placement. If a candidate receives an unacceptable rating in any category, he/she will be given an opportunity to raise the score during the second placement.
